About Sherwood Oregon
The first wagon arrived in Oregon in 1843 and the first settlers made their way to Sherwood to start farming in 1853. Most of what they needed could be grown but a couple times a year they’d head to Portland for staples like salt and sugar.
In 1885 JC Smock granted the railroad right-of-way on his property. From 1890 to 1895 Sherwood’s main industry was a brickyard that supplied most of the building bricks to a growing Portland population. Once closed the economy shifted to a tannery and a cannery for vegetables and fruit, supporting Sherwood all the way until 1971 when the main industry shifted to manufacturing. Manufacturing is still Sherwood’s main industry today.
In 1911 Sherwood was one square mile with a population of 350. Today the population is close to 20,000 and the city covers 4.5 square miles while retaining it’s small-town charm.
