A Basic Guide to Spring-Cleaning Windows

A Basic Guide to Spring-Cleaning Windows

Spring is one of the best times of the year to clean your windows. With the weather being pleasant for the next few months, nothing beats starting the season with a clean set of windows to admire nature from indoors. Our window and roof replacement experts have a quick guide to help you get started!

Prep Your Cleaning Agent

One of the first things you’ll probably think of when spring-cleaning windows is the cleaning agent. There are dozens of “special” cleaning products out there, but nothing beats good old water and vinegar. A 1:2 ratio would be good enough for stripping most stains without the risk of causing fading or corrosion. Tougher stains can be removed with diluted dishwashing liquid.

Clean Those Screens

Window screens prevent debris from clinging to your window panes, so they tend to be the dirtiest part of your windows. Windows and roofing services experts say that you should pop out those screens and wash with water or diluted soap. They can be wiped dry with a cloth, but leaving them out to dry on their own is also fine.

Wipe Carefully

Putting too much pressure while wiping glass can cause small particles to press against the surface and cause small scratches. Whether applying the cleaning mixture with a wet rag or drying it off with a microfiber cloth, make sure you’re not pressing on your windows too hard. You can get rid of the water with a squeegee, which is a much safer choice (plus it leaves no lint).

Wipe the Sill and Frames

The corners of the frame and the sill can accumulate a lot of dust and debris. Any window and roofing company will tell you that it’s safe to wipe those parts clean with a wet towel. However, you may have to get a fine cleaning brush to get to narrow gaps along the frame, especially if you’re cleaning a double-hung or sliding window. If you have to wipe over metal components, consider applying a bit of oil or lubricant to keep them from rusting.
