Repainting Your Home vs Replacing The Siding: Pros and Cons

When it comes to updating your home’s exterior, you have a choice whether to repaint your home or completely replace your siding. While either seem like good choices, you can choose only one and that’s where sprucing up your home’s exterior becomes difficult. Thankfully, choosing between the two doesn’t have to be difficult: you only need to know the pros and cons of both options.

In this post, exterior siding contractor A Cut Above Exteriors discusses the individual pros and cons of repainting your home and replacing your siding.

The Pros and Cons of Replacing Your Siding

Your first option in updating your home’s exterior is to replace the siding. Siding, as you know, has a wide variety of options when it comes to material and color. While you may have to pay a little extra depending on the material you’re using, keep in mind that siding lasts longer compared to paint, is more durable in the face of extreme weather and doesn’t require much maintenance unless you’re using wood siding. There are also some siding materials that can last anywhere between 25 to 50 years so long as it’s properly cared for.

Unfortunately, siding does have its own drawbacks. If you opt for the less costly siding option, it’s likely that it’s the least durable and weather-resistant material. Vinyl siding, in particular, tends to bend and warp due to its high flexibility, which will make repairs or replacement a necessity. Siding also tends to be more limited than paint, with few colors to choose from.

The Pros and Cons of Repainting Your Home

Repainting, on the other hand, is the cost alternative option to sprucing up your home’s exterior. If done right, repainting can give your home a fresh look that can last several years, especially if you use high quality paints. Paint can also be tinted to any color and allows you to preserve smaller details, making your appearance options limitless.

However, while repainting your home may sound like a good option, it does come with its disadvantages. For instance, it does have to be replaced every few years even if you do use paints of the best quality. Low-quality paints, on the other hand, are guaranteed to peel and fade quickly. Repainting your home is also a labor intensive task that requires a lot of prep work in order for the paint to adhere properly, meaning if you make a small mistake, the paint won’t last as long as you want it to.
