Common Reasons to Regret DIY Exterior Home Improvement

You’re overzealous; you’ve got that extra energy and time to start an exterior home improvement project all by yourself. You also want to prove to yourself that you don’t need to hire professionals for this. You might want to stop and think first! Countless do-it-yourself home improvement projects have failed, much to the dismay of homeowners.

Common Reasons to Regret DIY Exterior Home Improvement

In this blog, exterior siding contractor A Cut Above Exteriors cites some concrete evidence homeowners regretted DIY exterior home improvement projects in hopes of dissuading you from your course.

The Reasons

According to an independent study, 27% of respondents actually regret exterior DIY projects. They originally hoped to save at least 60% on average of what they would have to pay a professional to do the project for them.

The same study continues that 21% were most disappointed that the additional trees and shrubs they planted outside their homes didn’t hold up over time. 50% or more also said that repairing the foundation, installing a new roof or patio/walkway, designing landscapes, painting the exterior, and installing cedar siding were either physically harder or took longer than anticipated.

Call for Help

DIY bravado isn’t really new, however. In the U.S., eight is the average number of these projects attempted, with 63% regretting doing at least one DIY project. Some even got hurt or caused damage to their own homes!

Why keep doing these when you know they’re bound to fail? The study also showed that one out of three homeowners has called professional help anyway to undo their mistakes.
